Shattering refers to the process of a lower deity fracturing their very identity and being across reality. This process results in parts of the deity manifesting within mortal reality, which can take many forms.
When a deity shatters, common results include mortals being born with traits of the deity (personality, appearance, magic), landmarks appearing related to the deity in some way, and sudden manifestations of the deity's power.
Shattering is typically a last resort and a way to avoid complete death.
